WORLD CHARTER FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM (1995)

 

To analyze the contribution of tourism to the Sustainable Development model, UNESCO, UNWTO and other international organizations convened the first World Summit on Sustainable Tourism, in which the World Charter for Sustainable Tourism was approved.

THE RTI IS BORN (1997)

 

To apply the results of the Charter, UNESCO promotes the creation of the Responsible Tourism Institute. Since then the RTI maintains a close relationship with this body through a Memorandum of Understanding.

RESPONSIBLE TOURISM SYSTEM (1998) 

 

The Responsible Tourism Institute develops the Responsible Tourism System to promote, through the Biosphere methodology, the application and monitoring of sustainability criteria and the fight against climate change applied to tourism.

WORLD CHARTER FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM +20

 

Twenty years after the first World Charter on Sustainable Tourism, the RTI, with the sponsorship of UNESCO, UNWTO and UNEP, adapts the concept of tourism sustainability to the new reality, giving rise to the new World Charter for Sustainable Tourism + 20.

RENEWAL OF THE BIOSPHERE SYSTEM (2017)

 

In 2017, the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, the RTI reviews and adapts the Biosphere methodology throughout the tourism sector for destinations, companies, networks and tourists, incorporating the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement against climate change.
