Summits and events

Tourism is a phenomenon of global reach that directly and decisively affects local development, the quality of life, the maintenance of cultural and natural heritage and the environment. Due to the cross-cutting nature of its effects, a change of model in the management and development of tourism that allows the transition towards more sustainable destinations, companies and services is necessary and urgent. A model based on international cooperation to meet this goal under the premise of competitiveness through sustainability.

The framework for this change of model must be the one precisely formulated in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly within the framework of the 2030 Agenda. Analyzing each one of the Goals, it can be verified that the sustainable tourism development in destinations, businesses and services could become one of the key driving forces and a priority field for the implementation of the 17 UN SDGs.

As a fundamental part of this necessary transition towards sustainable tourism, the Responsible Tourism Institute has developed different meetings and conferences of local and international scope. The objective of these has been twofold: on the one hand to reach consensus on the criteria and optimal methodologies to measure the contribution of sustainable development objectives in tourism, and on the other hand to sensitize the decision-makers and the general public regarding the contribution of tourism to sustainability.
