Biography

Educated at Keble College, Oxford University: BA Honorus degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.

Postgraduated studies: MA Honorus degree in Economics of Industry and Statistics at The University os Sussex, Brighton, with scolarship from the Social Science Research Council.

Recruited through the British Tourist Authority as Researc Officer in 1969 by the non-governmental International Union of Official Travel Organizations (IUOTO) with Headquarters at Geneva, Switzerland.

Appointed Deputy Chief of Research at the World Tourism Organization (WTO) in 1976 following the transformation of IUOTO into an intergovernmental organization and the establishment of its Headquarters in Madrid, Spain. Served successively as Chief of Research, Chief of Facilitation and Liberalization, and Chief of Environment and Planning between 1980 and 1996. From 1988 to 2002 also acted as Secretary to WTO's Executive Council. Appointed Regional Representative for Europe in 1996, with responsibility for 40 countries. Appointed Director of Administration and Finance in 2002, this being the most senior non-elected post within the Secretariat. Served under four Secretaries-General. 

Has travelled extensively on behalf of the Organization visiting over 70 countries during a career spanning more than three decades.
