WHAT IS RESPONSIBLE TOURISM?

More than 1.300 million tourists crossed a border in 2017. Its impact on the economy was such that its contribution to world GDP exceeded 10% and contributed to the creation of more than 1 in 10 jobs worldwide.

This growth, as promising as it may seem, should not be separated from sustainability. All the actors that play a role in the tourism sector must contribute so that the benefits they generate are not overshadowed by possible negative impacts.

Sustainable tourism is essentially a set of practices that try to minimize the harmful effects that travel can entail, seeking to enhance their positive effects, so that they contribute to sustainable development.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A RESPONSIBLE TOURIST?

When it is not developed in a sustainable and responsible manner, the tourism activity can leave a trace of negative impacts. Those who travel responsibly seek to positively revert that paradigm, in a way that does not generate that kind of impact.

Responsible tourists are those who understand their responsibility to the Planet and seek to create a positive impact on the destination, bring benefits to the local population and not exhaust resources. In general, responsible tourists are the ones who travel so that their trips benefit the local populations of the places they visit.

THE POWER OF THE TOURIST: THE CHOICE

In the fight for a more sustainable world, tourists also have responsibilities to assume: use local transport, buy local goods, etc. Given its nature, tourism activity is the one that can contribute the most to sustainability, thanks to its complete transversality. It is because of this potential that tourists are the ones who have in their hands the best tool to contribute to sustainability: the choice of sustainable products and services.

Choosing, consuming and valuing tourism products and services whose sustainability is guaranteed, can contribute more than anything in a clear and decisive manner to maintain the virtuous circle of sustainable tourism.
