PhD Giuseppe Nerilli

Senior Expert in Sustainable Tourism, Ecosystem Services Assessment and International Development Cooperation.

With a lifetime dedicated to training, research and the implementation of sustainability at all levels, Giuseppe is an Agronomist graduated from the University of Bologna and specialized in soil conservation, he has an MBA in Sustainable Tourism Management, directed by Amos Good and awarded by the University for International Cooperation of Costa Rica and, finally, an MSc and PhD in Island Ecology and eco-social processes awarded by the University of La Laguna, Tenerife, Canary Islands. Within the framework of the Modena Local Agenda 21 Project, he has coordinated the Mobility group and drafted the Municipal Sustainable Mobility Plan, has participated in the Millennium Evaluation of the Ecosystems of Spain with the Evaluation of the Macaronesian Insular Ecosystem, first, and with the Evaluation of the Ecosystems in the Canary Islands, later, emphasizing the evaluation of the tourism sector in the Archipelago, he is co-author of the “Sustainable Tourism Guide. Challenges and criteria for the evaluation of the tourism sector in the face of the 2030 Agenda ”. In addition, he has extensive experience in International Development Cooperation projects in various countries, including Morocco, Niger, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Bolivia, the latter country where he works as Senior Expert for the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation in the Technical Assistance Program to the Ministry of Cultures and Tourism and, among other things, performs the adaptation for National Protected Areas of the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria for Destinations (GSTC-D), then approved and adopted by the National Service of Protected Areas as a National Reference Framework for the Development of Sustainable Tourism in such areas. Today, in addition to following the research work on indicators for the evaluation of the contribution of tourism to the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs, he is an Expert appointed by Italy to IPBES for the Methodological Evaluation of the Impact and Dependence of Companies on the Biological Diversity and Nature's Contributions to People. One of his favorite mottos is: "If it is not Sustainable, it is not Development."
